Countrywide Vitamin A Supplementation Project
Vitamin A deficiency remains a major public health concern in Uganda, contributing significantly to child morbidity and mortality. It is required for proper growth, vision, immune function, and overall development in children. Between 2021 and 2023, ChildFund, with support from Nutrition International partnered with the Ministry of Health – Uganda to scale up Vitamin A supplementation (VAS) for children aged 6–59 months across Uganda through a national Vitamin A mop-up intervention. By the end of the three-phase initiative, vitamin A supplementation coverage for children increased from 40% in 2021 to 75% by June 2023, with over 4.2 million children reached with this life-saving intervention nationwide.
The objectives of this project were to:
-
- Support the Ministry of Health to roll-out a Vitamin A supplementation mop-up campaign to reach at least 80% of children from 6 to 59 months of age and postpartum mothers across the country by the Ministry of Health.
- Ensure that funds are effectively and efficiently used to support the Ministry to roll out the Vitamin A supplementation campaign.
- Countrywide
A total of 6,227,033 children received Vitamin A supplementation in all 135 districts in Uganda plus the capital city of Kampala.
