Every child has the right to a clean, healthy, sustainable and abundant environment.

In Uganda today, children are experiencing more frequent and intense weather-related disasters—longer droughts, heavier floods. These environmental shocks are disrupting livelihoods and deepening food insecurity, threatening children’s safety, well-being and survival.

Compounding these challenges are resource-based conflicts, as communities compete over dwindling access to water and fertile land. These tensions often erupt into violence, disproportionately affecting girls, boys, and women.

As these crises escalate, so do the risks to the natural resources that children depend on to grow, learn, and thrive. That’s why our sustainability programs focus on building the resilience of families and communities, equipping them to anticipate, withstand, and recover from environmental shocks. Through adaptation and disaster risk management initiatives in schools and communities, we help lay the foundation for long-term resilience. We also support peacebuilding efforts that address the root causes of conflict at community level.

Centering Children in Building Sustainability

We see what natural catastrophes do to children and youth who live on the frontlines of environmental shocks in the communities where we work. These events undo the developmental gains children and youth have made toward achieving their potential.

This requires a holistic response that embodies both adaptation and environmental care, across all levels of society, to ensure the continued achievement of positive outcomes with children across health, education, protection and livelihoods.

Our approach to community resilience focuses on creating a safe, clean, biodiverse, and sustainable environment where children and youth can grow up healthy, educated, and secure. We incorporate children’s unique needs and perspectives into local, national, and even global conversations about environmental action.

We prioritize young people’s right to participate—ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to lead environmental conservation and adaptation efforts. Whether through school clubs, youth-led advocacy, or community planning forums, we enable children and youth to speak out and take action for their future.

ChildFund strengthens the capacity of communities to prepare for and respond to environmental shocks. We equip communities with the necessary skills and resources to engage in alternative livelihoods and bolster resilience. By focusing on preparedness and proactive adaptation strategies, we help families to survive and thrive despite the challenges posed by changing weather patterns.

ChildFund is promoting Smart Agriculture (SA)—an integrated approach guiding farmers toward sustainable and resilient farming techniques. We support communities in adopting practices that enhance agricultural productivity, improve adaptability to environmental changes, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This includes introducing resilient crops, encouraging soil conservation, and training communities on water management practices like water for production and watershed reclamation.

In collaboration with communities, we focus on re-greening areas and restoring degraded landscapes. Through solutions like tree planting, Farmer-Managed Natural Resource Regeneration (FMNR), and improving access to clean water, we work together to enhance ecosystem restoration. Additionally, we introduce drought-resistant crops and livestock to support sustainable farming practices that protect both the environment and livelihoods.

We support children and youth at the forefront of environmental challenges by providing opportunities, resources, and safe spaces for them to engage in environmental advocacy. We also equip them to influence policy decisions at local, national, and global levels, ensuring their voices are integral in shaping a sustainable future.

Every year, we support over 1,000 youth to participate in the Youth Day of Service (YDoS), a month-long campaign celebrated alongside the UN International Youth Day in August. This initiative empowers young people to take the lead in creating impactful solutions to address environmental challenges in their communities.

At ChildFund, we are committed to practicing what we preach. Guided by ChildFund’s global environmental standards and policy, we are taking steps to reduce our own environmental footprint—by limiting plastic use and paper printing, choosing sustainable sourcing, promoting energy-efficient practices, and learning from our peers across the globe. Building a resilient future for children starts with us.

Project Spotlight

Youth-Led Action for Environmental Sustainability

With over 78% of Uganda’s population under the age of 30, the question is no longer whether youth should lead. It is how we support them to do so.  This year, ChildFund joined forces with LEAP Africa and Dow Chemical to answer that question through a nationwide Youth Day of Service campaign that turned ideas into action. Over a thousand people across the country were mobilised to champion environmental resilience, digital empowerment and social responsibility during this year’s Youth Day of Service (YDoS) campaign.

Youth were drawn from 11 districts including; Kyankwanzi, Luwero, Wakiso, Busia, Mbale, Sironko, Budaka, Butaleja, Dokolo, Kole and Kwania, impacting communities in four ChildFund-supported areas of Lango, Bugisu, Kiboga and Busia.  The initiative was ChildFund’s contribution to the International Youth Day commemoration, celebrated globally under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.
