Our nutrition and food security program in Uganda addresses child and family well-being by promoting exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding and nutrition assessment. In response to rising food insecurity linked to risky coping behaviors, ChildFund implements sustainable, community-driven approaches to boost household food resilience. Leveraging over 20 years of experience with Farmer Field Schools and Graduation Models, the program enhances crop yields, improves access to diverse diets and supports income-generating activities. Strategic partnerships with NAADS, local governments and universities, along with active participation in Uganda’s Livelihoods Technical Working Group, ensure alignment with national priorities and effective project delivery.

2023

This assessment evaluated the impact and sustainability of a youth and women-focused livelihoods project using digital tools and interviews with 206 respondents. Key findings showed significant income improvements among teen mothers, youth and women rising from as low as $18 to as high as $590 and 97% of participants established income-generating activities, mainly in animal and poultry rearing.

2024

This evaluation report provides insights into the impact of the three-year Resilience Livelihoods Project (2020–2023) implemented by ChildFund, Lango Child and Community Development Federation and Partners for Children Worldwide in northeastern Uganda, revealing increased household incomes for 65% of 8,471 farmers due to improved agricultural practices and enhanced self-employment among 400 vocationally trained youth, despite challenges such as limited capital, market access and livestock diseases.

2020

Young people make up a huge proportion of the world’s population. Roughly 1.8 billion people are between the ages of 10 and 241, and the challenges they face today are stark: In 2020, more than 1 in five young people worldwide aged 15-24 was not employed, in job training or in school, and this has only worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. ChildFund’s livelihood programming focuses broadly on youth work and entrepreneurial skills, employability and work readiness. Many of our programs also overlap with youth participation programming and adolescent sexual and reproductive health so we are able to holistically support youth through this life stage, properly preparing them not only for work, but for being able to stay employed, continue their education and remain safe and healthy.
