How one family changed the lives of three generations
July 21, 2025

From left to right: John, Joseph, Raymond, Rogers and Helga Rainer share a light moment together.
When Joseph Rainer, an American national, began sponsoring a child in Uganda several decades ago, he had no idea his simple act of kindness would ripple across generations, transforming not only the life of a bright young boy named John, but eventually inspiring his own children and grandchildren to carry the torch.
Today, John is a respected Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in Uganda, dressed in a sharp suit, standing proudly to meet the family of the man who helped change his destiny.
“I wish I could have met my sponsor, Rainer,” John says with deep emotion. “Without his help, maybe I would still be stuck in the village. But now, I’m somebody. Because of his support, I became a lawyer.”
Although Rainer passed away in 2008, his legacy lives on, stronger than ever. His children, Joseph and Sarabeth Kawugule, continued the family’s tradition of giving. They flew in from Florida in the USA to visit their sponsored child, Rogers, under the Kampala Area Federation of Communities. What they thought would be a simple sponsor visit turned into something profoundly moving: a reunion of three generations, John, Raymond and Rogers, all touched by one family’s generosity.

“We saw it growing up,” Joseph recalls. “Dad and Mum would take us to the villages. I remember sorting through pictures of children they had taken. From learning under trees to now becoming magistrates, carpenters, technicians, this is proof that sponsorship works.”
Sarabeth, a teacher for over 16 years, adds, “Every child is born with boundless potential. They just need the opportunity. Education changes everything.”

The evidence is standing right before them: Raymond, 28, sponsored in 2005, is now a skilled mechanic and father. “I feel good seeing my sponsors again. I’ve been working for four years, I can sustain my family and I have medical insurance for my son. They made me a father and now a provider.”
Rogers, 21, beams as he shakes hands with his sponsors. “Meeting John has encouraged me to work hard and have a bright future.”

And John? He’s paying it forward. “Some children are bright but just need help. I pay tribute to Rainer and his family. This is the power of sponsorship. It lifts entire families and generations.”
