Burning the midnight oil: Rural learners keep their dreams alive

February 18, 2026

Let there be light!!! This is a phrase we all know well.

But in regions where electricity access is as low as 5%, many children’s study time ends at sunset. ChildFund, in partnership with Econic Earth launched the WattsON Students Lighting Project in Lango and Teso Sub Regions, distributing 2,200 solar lamps to upper primary learners. With the introduction of solar lighting, pupils can now revise comfortably in the evenings, strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills, and prepare more confidently for their exams.

In 2024, ChildFund Uganda allocated 83% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
