Parenting in crisis: How refugee parents are creating safe homes for children

July 4, 2025

In this video, we shine a light on positive parenting among refugee families in Palorinya Refugee Settlement, located in Obongi District, Northern Uganda. Refugee parents here are navigating the challenges of displacement while striving to raise emotionally stable and well-protected children. Through community-based parenting sessions, parents are learning non-violent discipline, improved communication and nurturing techniques that build strong family bonds even in crisis situations.

At ChildFund, we believe that to truly uplift children, we must also support the entire ecosystem that surrounds them, parents, caregivers, teachers and communities.

With ongoing humanitarian needs and limited access to essential services, many refugee families continue to face stress, trauma and economic strain. In this context, positive parenting isn’t just important. It’s life changing. Watch how these families are embracing new tools to protect, guide and raise the next generation.

In 2024, ChildFund Uganda allocated 83% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
